Tesla EV market: How Tesla Transformed the Electric Vehicle Industry
Tesla EV market: How Tesla Transformed the Electric Vehicle Industry
Let me tell you how I felt in 2010.Tesla EV market
I was 19. My uncle bought a Chevy Volt. He was so proud. “It’s electric” he said.
I drove it once. It felt like driving a microwave. Slow. Boring. And every 30 miles I was looking for a charger like my life depended on it.
I told my friends “Electric cars will never work.”
Fast forward to last month. That same uncle sold his 2 gas cars and bought a Tesla Model Y. He showed me how he can turn on the AC from his phone.
I just sat there and thought. When did this happen?
That is the story of Tesla EV marketTesla EV market.Tesla EV market.
It didn’t happen overnight. It happened with late nights, almost bankruptcy, and a guy who tweets too much.
This is the real story. Not the PR version.
Tesla EV market Before 2008: It Was Dead
2005. I remember it clearly.
Gas was getting expensive. Al Gore made that movie about global warming. But walk into any car dealership and ask for electric.
The guy would laugh and point you to a Toyota Prius.
That was it. That was “electric” back then.
EVs Were a Joke
GM made the EV1 in the 90s. It was actually good. Then GM took them all back and crushed them. Literally. With bulldozers.
There is a documentary about it. People were crying.
Toyota had the Prius. But it wasn’t full electric. And it looked like it was designed to be as ugly as possible on purpose.
The other EVs were worse. 50-60 miles range. 8 hours to charge. $40,000.
0 to 60 in 15 seconds if you were going downhill.
Every car CEO said the same thing: “Batteries are too expensive. Consumers don’t want electric.”
And you know what? They were right.
Buying an EV in 2005 meant you were sacrificing. You did it to feel good, not because the car was good.
That is the graveyard Tesla EV market walked into.
How Tesla EV market Started: Two Guys in a Garage
Tesla didn’t start with Elon Musk.
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning started it in 2003. They were engineers. They loved cars and they hated gas.
Elon Musk came in 2004 with money from PayPal. He became chairman. Then CEO in 2008.
But here is what made them different.
Every other car company asked “How do we make an electric car cheaper?”
Tesla asked “How do we make a car so good that people forget it’s electric?”
2008: The Roadster Changed My Mind
The first Tesla was the Roadster. $109,000.
It was based on a Lotus Elise. Small. 2 seats.
0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. That was faster than my dream car, a Porsche.
245 miles of range.
I saw a video of it on YouTube. The comments were all “No way that’s electric.”
That was the point. Tesla EV market started by breaking the biggest rule. EVs are slow.
They only made 2,450 of them. But it proved something.
And the way they built the battery was crazy. 6,831 laptop batteries wired together.
Car engineers said “that will catch fire.”
It did catch fire a few times. But they fixed it. And it was cheap.
Tesla EV market Got Serious: Model S
2012. I was in college.
Tesla launched the Model S. A big 4 door sedan. $75,000.
This is when I first thought “okay this is real.”
The Range Problem Was Gone
265 miles on one charge.
That meant you could actually drive somewhere. LA to Vegas. New York to Boston.
Car magazines went crazy. MotorTrend gave it Car of the Year. Over Mercedes and BMW.
A company that was 8 years old beat 100 year old companies.
It Didn’t Look Weird
This was huge.
The Prius looked like a spaceship. The Leaf looked like a frog.
The Model S looked normal. Sleek. Like a Jaguar.
But inside it had a giant iPad in the middle. No buttons.
People bought it because it was a better car. Not because they wanted to save polar bears.
The Update That Blew My Mind
In 2013 Tesla sent an update to every Model S while people slept.
The next morning, the cars were faster.
Think about that. When did Ford ever make your car faster after you bought it? Never.
Tesla said “your car gets better over time.”
By 2015 Model S was selling more than Mercedes S-Class in the US.
That is when Ford and GM executives started having nightmares.
Tesla EV market Secret Weapon: Batteries
Everyone thought Tesla was a car company.
It wasn’t. It was a battery company that made cars.
Gigafactory 1: The Big Bet
2014. Elon stands in the desert in Nevada and says “We are building the biggest battery factory on earth.”
Cost: $5 billion.
Everyone laughed. “Why not just buy batteries from LG?”
Because Tesla did the math. Battery is 40% of the cost of an EV. If you make your own, you control the price.
By 2018 Tesla was making batteries for $190 per kWh. Everyone else was at $300.
That is how they could sell a car for $35,000 and not lose money.
GM couldn’t. Ford couldn’t.
Making Everything Themselves
Tesla also started making its own computer chips. Its own software. Its own motors.
Normal car companies have 2,000 suppliers. Tesla has 200.
When the chip shortage happened in 2021, Ford shut down factories for months.
Tesla engineers rewrote the software in 2 weeks to use a different chip.
That is why Tesla EV market moved faster than everyone else.
Tesla EV market Went Mass: The Model 3
March 31, 2016. I watched the livestream.
Tesla reveals Model 3. $35,000.
Within 2 weeks, 400,000 people put down $1,000. Without driving it. Without seeing the inside.
This Was The iPhone Moment
Before Model 3, you had 2 choices. Expensive Tesla or crappy EV.
Model 3 was neither.
250 miles range. 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds. Clean design. Autopilot.
It became the best selling EV in the world.
It Almost Killed Tesla
Making Model 3 was hell.
Elon slept on the factory floor in Fremont. For months.
They built a giant tent outside the factory to assemble cars.
They missed every deadline. The stock crashed. People said Tesla would go bankrupt.
But they figured it out. By 2019 they were making 5,000 cars a week.
And that scared every other car company.
VW called an emergency meeting. GM said “we need EVs now.” Ford made an electric Mustang.
Tesla EV market created so much demand that everyone had to follow.
Tesla EV market Fixed Charging: Superchargers
This is the part nobody talks about enough.
In 2012 if you bought a Nissan Leaf, you could not drive across the country. Period.
Where would you charge?
Tesla said “we will build the chargers.”
Superchargers Were a Game Changer
15 minutes = 200 miles.
Put them on highways every 100 miles.
You plug in. The car pays automatically. No app. No card.
By 2025 there are 50,000 Superchargers.
Other car companies waited for the government or for Shell to build chargers.
They are still waiting.
In 2023 Ford and GM announced “we will use Tesla’s charging plug.”
That was the moment. The industry gave up. Tesla’s plug became the standard.
Tesla EV market won because they owned the gas stations.
Tesla EV market and Software: The Real Magic
Here is something weird.
My friend’s 2018 Tesla got better in 2024.
How? Software update.
Cars That Learn
Traditional cars get worse. Tesla’s get better.
Autopilot in 2014 was bad. In 2025 it can drive you to work.
Is it perfect? No. But it is better than anything BMW or Mercedes has.
Every Tesla on the road sends data back. Billions of miles.
The App
I can turn on my friend’s Tesla from my phone.
Heat it in winter. Cool it in summer. Honk it in a parking lot.
My friend’s dad is 72. He doesn’t care about 0 to 60. He cares that he doesn’t have to go outside to defrost the car.
That is why Tesla EV market grew. Convenience.
How Tesla EV market Scared The Industry
Tesla didn’t just sell cars. They caused panic.
2018 to 2020: Everyone Freaked Out
The CEO of Volkswagen said “Tesla is 6 years ahead of us.”
GM announced “we go all electric by 2035.”
Ford made the Mustang Mach-E and called it a “Tesla fighter.”
Mercedes, BMW, Hyundai all rushed to launch EVs.
Why? Because investors asked one question in every meeting: “What is your Tesla plan?”
In 2021 Tesla became worth $1 trillion. More than Toyota, VW, GM and Ford combined.
The Laws Changed Too
California said “no gas cars after 2035.”
EU said the same. China too.
Would that have happened without Tesla? Maybe in 2040.
Tesla made it happen in 2030. Because they proved it was possible and profitable.
Tesla EV market Isn’t Perfect
I need to be honest here.
Quality Was Bad
2018 Model 3s had panel gaps. You could fit a finger between panels.
Paint was thin. Service centers had 3 week waits.
They fixed a lot by 2022. But early buyers paid the price.
Elon Is a Problem
Elon Musk is Tesla.
When he tweets, the stock goes up and down.
When he bought Twitter, a lot of people said “I’m not buying a Tesla anymore.”
That is a huge risk for a car company.
Competition Is Here
2025. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is amazing. Kia EV6 is amazing. BYD in China sells more EVs than Tesla.
Tesla’s market share dropped from 80% in 2018 to 50% in 2024.
But here is the thing. That was the plan. Tesla’s mission is “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
If BYD sells more EVs, Tesla still wins.
Tesla EV market in 2025: By The Numbers
Let’s look at facts.
2010
Worldwide EV sales: 10,000 cars
Tesla: 0
2024
Worldwide EV sales: 14 million cars
Tesla: 1.8 million
EVs are now 18% of all new cars.
In Norway, 9 out of 10 new cars are electric.
In China, BYD and Tesla are fighting for number 1.
And every new car company is an EV company. Rivian. Lucid. Nio.
None of them would exist without Tesla proving people would actually buy them.
The 5 Things Tesla Did
1. Made EVs fast and beautiful
2. Built their own batteries
3. Built Superchargers
4. Made cars that update like phones
5. Forced every other company to copy them
No one else did all five.
What’s Next for Tesla EV market
Tesla is not done.
Cybertruck
2024 they finally shipped it. It looks like a triangle.
1 million people put down deposits.
Robotaxi
2025 they are promising cars with no driver. You call it with an app.
If that works, Tesla is not a car company anymore. It is Uber.
The $25,000 Car
They have been promising this since 2020.
If they launch it in 2025 or 2026, that is Toyota Corolla price.
That is when Tesla EV market wins for good. When electric is cheaper than gas.
My Final Take on Tesla EV market
Did Tesla save electric cars? 100% yes.
Without Tesla, we would have EVs in 2035. But they would be slow, boring compliance cars that dealerships didn’t want to sell.
Tesla made them cool. Fast. Profitable.
I don’t own a Tesla. I drive a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and I love it.
But I respect what Tesla did.
They took the hardest industry in the world and changed it in 15 years.
The next 15 years, every new car will be electric.
And it started because two guys in 2003 decided to put laptop batteries in a Lotus.
If You Are Buying a Car in 2025
1. Test drive a Tesla. Even if you don’t buy it. Just to feel it.
2. Check what charging plug it uses. NACS is better in the US.
3. Don’t buy an EV that doesn’t get software updates. It will feel old in 2 years.
The market changed. Because one company said “no” to “this is how we’ve always done it.”
Frequently Asked Questions
