Complete Timeline of World War II (1939-1945): Full Story
World War 2 Timeline: 1939 – The War Begins
A World War 2 Timeline has to start with arrogance. Because that’s what started it.
September 1, 1939. 4:45 AM. German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Poland.
Hitler was done with meetings. He wanted land. He’d already swallowed Austria and Czechoslovakia and the world just watched.
Britain and France gave him an ultimatum. Get out.
He didn’t.
September 3rd, Britain and France declared war. And just like that, the world was on fire.
September 17, 1939 – The Secret Deal
This is the part they don’t teach in school.
While Germany attacked Poland from the west, Stalin attacked from the east.
They had a secret deal. Split Poland in half.
27 days later, Poland didn’t exist anymore.
Late 1939 – The Phoney War
For 8 months, nothing.
Soldiers sat in France and Germany, staring at each other across trenches.
Newspapers called it “Phoney” because it felt like a fake war.
But it wasn’t fake. Both sides were building bombs, tanks, and plans.
November 30, 1939 – Winter War
Stalin got greedy. He wanted part of Finland.
The Finns were outnumbered 3 to 1. They fought in -40C snow with skis.
Killed 300,000 Russians.
Russia won the land but lost its reputation. The world saw the Red Army was weak.
1940 started quiet. It didn’t stay that way.
Germany had learned something in Poland. Tanks work best when they don’t stop.
They called it Blitzkrieg. Lightning war.
April 9th, Denmark surrendered in 6 hours. Norway fell in 2 months.
Then May 10th, they hit France.
France had the best army in 1918. In 1940 it collapsed in 6 weeks.
Paris fell. The government ran.
The British army ran too, all the way to Dunkirk beach.
May 26 to June 4, 1940. Miracle.
338,000 men trapped. German tanks 10 miles away.
Then 800 boats showed up. Fishing boats. Pleasure boats.
Civilians crossed the channel under fire and pulled the army out.
Britain survived because of fishermen.
July to October 1940. Battle of Britain.
Now it was just Britain vs Germany. Alone.
German bombers came every night to London. 40,000 civilians died. Kids slept in subway stations.
But Britain had radar. And they had Spitfires.
They shot down so many German planes that Hitler gave up on invasion.
First time Germany lost.
World War 2 Timeline: 1942 to 1944 – The Turning Point
If 1939-1941 was Germany winning, then 1942 was when it all flipped.
June 22, 1941 – Operation Barbarossa
Hitler’s biggest mistake. He attacked Russia.
3 million German soldiers. 3,000 tanks. Biggest invasion in history.
At first it worked. They captured 3 million Russians in months.
They got to the edge of Moscow.
Then winter hit. -40 degrees. Guns froze. Oil froze. Men froze.
They had to retreat. That was the beginning of the end.
December 7, 1941 – Pearl Harbor
Sunday morning. Japan wanted oil. The US said no.
So Japan decided to knock out the US Navy in one strike.
353 planes hit Hawaii. 2,400 Americans died. 18 ships sunk.
Next day, America was in the war.
That’s when Germany was doomed. They just didn’t know it yet.
December 11, 1941 – Germany Declares War on USA
Hitler didn’t have to. But he did.
Now he was fighting the US, Russia, and Britain all at the same time.
No one wins that fight.
1942 started dark.
In January, Nazi leaders met in Berlin for lunch. They called it the Wannsee Conference.
They planned to kill 11 million Jews. Death camps like Auschwitz started running full speed.
But militarily, things were changing.
June 4-7, 1942 – Battle of Midway
US codebreakers figured out where Japan would attack next.
US planes sank 4 Japanese aircraft carriers in 5 minutes.
Japan never recovered. The Pacific War turned right there.
August 1942 – February 1943 – Stalingrad
This was hell. 2 million men fighting for one frozen city.
House to house. Sewer to sewer. No food.
Germany’s 6th Army was surrounded and destroyed.
300,000 men gone.
After Stalingrad, Germany never advanced in Russia again. Only retreated.
July 1943 – Italy Falls
Allies landed in Sicily. Italians threw out Mussolini and surrendered.
But Germany took over northern Italy and fought for 2 more years.
June 6, 1944 – D-Day
The biggest day.
150,000 men crossed the English Channel in boats.
They landed on 5 beaches in France. Omaha Beach was a bloodbath. Bodies in the water.
But by the end of the day, the Allies were in France.
Germany was now getting hit from the east by Russia and from the west by US and Britain.
August 25, 1944 – Paris Liberated
People were crying in the streets.
French flag went back up on the Eiffel Tower.
France was free.
By the end of 1944, Germany was surrounded.
It was just a matter of time.
Why This Timeline Still Matters Today
We don’t remember 1939-1945 just for dates and battles.
This war made the world we live in.
The United Nations was born because of it.
The Cold War between US and Russia started because of it.
Israel was created because of it.
Germany was split in two, then reunited.
We got computers, jet planes, and nuclear weapons because of it.
But the real reason we study this World War 2 Timeline is simpler.
When you let a dictator take land and nobody stops him, millions die.
70 to 85 million people died. 50 million were civilians.
That’s more than the entire population of Germany today.
We remember so we don’t do it again.
So the next time someone starts talking about “more land” and “strong nation”, we know where it ends.
February 1945 – Yalta Conference
Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met in Crimea.
They drew the map for after the war.
They didn’t know they were also starting the Cold War.
April 12, 1945 – FDR Dies
US President Roosevelt died. Harry Truman took over.
He didn’t even know about the atomic bomb.
April 30, 1945 – Hitler Dies
Russians were in Berlin.
In a bunker underground, Hitler shot himself.
Germany had 8 days left.
May 8, 1945 – V-E Day
Germany surrendered. Victory in Europe.
People danced in Times Square and London.
August 6, 1945 – Hiroshima
One plane. One bomb. City gone.
80,000 dead in seconds.
August 9, 1945 – Nagasaki
Second bomb. Japan had no choice.
September 2, 1945 – V-J Day
Japan signed surrender on a US battleship.
Cameras rolling. The world watched.
2,174 days. Over.
