Chernobyl Accident History: I Read The Files And I Still Can’t Believe It
Chernobyl accident history starts with a button at 1:23 AM
The Chernobyl accident history is the reason I don’t trust “everything is fine.”
Let me tell you straight bhai. I spent 4 nights reading this. After finishing I went to my balcony and just sat there.
April 26, 1986. 1:23 AM. A 25 year old operator pressed one button.
37 seconds later the world had its worst nuclear disaster.
My uncle was in the army in 1986. He said for 3 days TV only showed cricket and farming news.
On day 4 Sweden called Moscow and said “bro your radiation is in our country.”
That is how big the lie was.
Today I will tell you the full Chernobyl accident history. No HBO. No drama. Just facts and people.
What happened in 3 lines
The explosion
Reactor 4 exploded during a safety test at 1:23 AM.
The damage
Steam blew the roof off. Graphite caught fire for 10 days.
Radiation went into the air.
The people
30 died right away. 50,000 people in Pripyat left in 3 hours.
They were told “3 days” and 38 years later they are still waiting.
Before the accident: Where is Chernobyl accident history
and why
Locatin of the plant
Chernobyl is in northern Ukraine. In 1986 it was Soviet Union.
The plant was 3km from Pripyat city. 130km from Kyiv.
They built it there because land was empty.
The RBMK reactor problem
They built 4 reactors. RBMK-1000 type.
This reactor had 2 big problems.
Problem 1: Positive void coefficient.
If water turns to steam, power goes UP. Every other reactor does the opposite.
Problem 2: Graphite tips on control rods.
When you press emergency button, power spikes for 3 seconds first.
Engineers told Moscow in 1975. Moscow said “too expensive.”
That decision killed people 11 years later.
April 25, 1986: The day before disaster
Why they needed the test
The plant had to do one safety test.
Question: If we lose power, can the turbine keep water pumps running for 60 seconds?
The first mistake
To do the test they turned off all safety systems.
All of them. Emergency cooling. Everything.
The waiting period
1:00 PM they started lowering power to 25 percent.
11:10 PM Kyiv called and said “wait, we need power.”
So the reactor sat at 25 percent for 11 hours.
This is very bad. RBMK reactors become unstable at low power.
Any good engineer would shut it down. But they wanted to finish the test.
Chernobyl accident history: Hour by hour that night
April 26, 12:28 AM – Power drops to 7 percent
New shift comes in. Senior staff went home.
Power drops too low. Alarms screaming.
Operator Leonid pulls out control rods to raise power.
This makes the reactor even more unstable.
April 26, 1:00 AM – The test starts
They start the test finally.
4 water pumps running. That is too many.
Emergency cooling system is OFF.
April 26, 1:23:04 AM – They press AZ-5
Emergency shutdown button pressed.
But because of graphite tips, power spikes for 3 seconds.
It goes from 200 MW to 33,000 MW.
April 26, 1:23:40 AM – BOOM
First explosion. 1000 ton lid flies 500 meters in the air.
Second explosion. Fuel and graphite thrown 1km.
The roof is gone. You can see stars.
The reactor core is on fire.
The first 3 hours: Nobody understood
Control room was confused
The room was damaged but lights worked.
Operators looked at gauges. Gauges showed impossible numbers.
So they decided gauges were broken. Not the reactor.
Firefighters arrived
6 minutes later. Young guys. 20 to 30 years old.
They saw glowing black rocks on the ground.
They picked them up with bare hands and threw them on the roof.
Those were pieces of the reactor core. Pure radiation.
The phone call to Moscow
4:00 AM. Plant director Viktor Bryukhanov calls.
“There was an explosion. But reactor is intact. Just a fire.”
He believed it. Or he had to say it. I don’t know.
Day 1: April 26 – Pripyat has no idea
Morning in Pripyat
Sunny Saturday. 50,000 people wake up.
Kids go to school. People go to market.
Radiation is 400 times normal.
Nobody says anything on the radio.
What people were doing
Weddings were happening.
The amusement park was supposed to open May 1st.
Ferris wheel was ready. Nobody ever rode it.
Chernobyl accident history:Day 2: April 27 – Evacuation
2 PM announcement
36 hours later. Finally.
Loudspeaker: “Attention. Leave in 3 hours. Bring documents. Return in 3 days.”
The evacuation
1200 buses came.
People packed one bag. Left their dogs. Left their cats.
Left food on the table. Left photos on the wall.
They never came back.
What they left behind
I saw photos. Dolls in cribs.
Clothes in closets. Cars in parking.
A whole city frozen in time.
Day 3 to Day 10: The world finds out Chernobyl accident history
April 28 – Sweden detects it
Radiation alarms go off in Sweden.
They call Moscow. “Did you have an accident?”
Moscow: “No.”
May 1 – Parade in Kyiv
May Day parade. 50km from Chernobyl.
Kids marching with balloons.
While radiation is in the air.
May 5 – Fire goes out
10 days later the fire stops.
Helicopters dropped 5000 tons of sand, boron, and lead.
Pilots flew through radiation. Many died in 5 years.
Why did Chernobyl accident history happen
Reason 1: Bad reactor design
RBMK was cheap and dangerous.
The flaws were known for 11 years. Nobody fixed it.
Reason 2: Human error
Night shift. Tired people. Junior staff.
They ignored alarms. They violated rules.
Pressure to finish test before maintenance.
Reason 3: Soviet system
In USSR you don’t report problems.
You say “everything is fine” until people die.
So they lied for 3 days while radiation spread.
The cleanup: 600,000 liquidators
Who were the liquidators
Soldiers, miners, engineers, doctors.
600,000 people sent to clean.
What was their job
Job 1: Shovel radioactive graphite off the roof.
Job 2: Dig tunnel under reactor.
Job 3: Build concrete sarcophagus in 6 months.
The conditions
40 seconds work time on the roof.
Because radiation was too high.
One guy said “We were not humans. We were shovels.”
The sarcophagus was finished November 1986.
30 years later: Pripyat and the zone today
Pripyat ghost city
Still empty after 38 years.
School books on desks. Toys in rooms.
Ferris wheel rusting.
The Exclusion Zone
30km radius. 2600 square kilometers.
Officially nobody lives there.
But 200 old people moved back. They call themselves samosely.
New Safe Confinement
2016 they built giant arch over old sarcophagus.
108 meters tall. Cost 1.6 billion dollars.
Supposed to last 100 years.
Nature came back
Wolves, deer, boars, horses.
No humans means nature is happy.
But the mushrooms and berries are radioactive.
Chernobyl accident history:How many people actually died
The different numbers
Official Soviet: 31 people
WHO 2005: 4,000 cancer deaths
Greenpeace: 93,000 to 200,000
What is the truth
Probably between 4,000 and 16,000.
But 5 million people still live in contaminated areas.
Thyroid cancer in children went up 10 times in 1990s.
Numbers don’t matter when it is your family.
Wht did the world learn from Chernobyl accident history
3 big changes
Change 1: All RBMK reactors were modified. Graphite tips removed.
Change 2: IAEA got more power. Countries must report accidents.
Change 3: Safety culture became real. Not just posters.
The biggest lesson
When you care more about image than safety, people die.
My personal thoughts on Chernobyl accident history
Bhai I will be honest. This hit me hard.
I read about Aleksandr Akimov. He was shift supervisor.
After explosion he stayed in control room.
Radiation was melting metal.
He was trying to pump water into a reactor that was gone.
He died 2 weeks later. He was 33.
He knew it was hopeless. He stayed anyway.
That is Chernobyl to me. Not the explosion. The people.
Three engineers said “this test is dangerous.”
They were told “do it anyway.”
